Design & Bold Colors Week

Day 1 Photos.
Students kicked off the morning by designing their sketchbook covers with bright and bold shapes. We introduced modern art with a lesson on Impressionism. After learning about Monet, we did some plein air painting of our own outside. We then learned about Post-Impressionism and artist Paul Cézanne (also known as the "father of modern art").
After lunch, we spent the rest of the day working on different still life projects, including a large cardboard still life with so many fun details! We finished the day, with print making using foam cut outs.

It was a great and full day, so let's dive right into our recap. We started the day sketching giant hats on different people and objects, made colorful portraits of each other and learned about the Fauvism art movement. We talked about Henri Matisse and his painting "Woman with a Hat." Students then made their own oil pastel creations of people (or other subjects) in hats! Before lunch, we discussed the difference between design and art and worked on designing our own shoe and brand name.
After lunch (which included a fun dance break), students studied Expressionism and Wassily Kanindsky and then painted Expressionism foam sculptures. We finished the day finalizing the student's cardboard still life projects...which might end up being one of my favorite projects from this entire summer! These are SO CUTE!

Today was poppin'! So sorry for the pun :) but we learned about Pop Art Today!! We started with a drawing prompt and moved to a super fun lesson on screen printing. After reviewing our artists from the week, we learned about Picasso and Cubism.
Students then worked on bright colored cardboard portraits and their shoe designs before lunch. After lunch (and another dance break), we dove into Pop art and some fun doodle portraits.
